Dental Implant Restoration

Sometimes a tooth is too badly damaged to save and must be extracted. The tooth needs to be replaced though, as a host of other dental problems can arise from not having a tooth.

Reasons you might need a dental implant:

  • An improper bite caused by teeth shifting
  • The partner of the tooth on the opposite jaw can begin to fall down into the gap
  • Damage to the adjacent teeth due to the shifting which can cause sensitivity from exposed root surfaces and periodontal pocketing
  • Food particles and bacteria accumulating in the gums where the tooth should be

Not to mention, many people don’t like having a gap in their teeth.  Thanks to advances in dental medicine, there is an option other than dentures or bridges for missing teeth.

How dental implants work:

An artificial tooth is created to replace the one that is missing, and is typically placed in one or two sessions – depending on the severity of the damage. The most common procedure is to install the implant into the jaw, essentially replacing the old root with a screw, and then giving the bone several months to heal and grow in around the new structure. After the bone has completely healed around the screw, a crown is placed on top of the tooth to complete the process. In some cases, it can be done in a single session, it all depends on the location of the tooth and how the tooth was lost.

Every person is different, so the circumstances surrounding the loss of the original tooth will dictate the course of action. When the implant is finished, it will look, feel, and function like a regular tooth! They’re virtually undetectable, and with regular care, the implant should last for the rest of your life.

If you have more questions about the process, give us a call!
